NEWLAND, N.C. --- Taduez Poplawski (Asheville, N.C.) posted an impressive victory in singles play to pace the Lees-McRae College men's tennis team on Saturday afternoon, as Queens University of Charlotte held on for an 8-1 win in Conference Carolinas action at Avery County High School.
Queens' (6-4, 4-3 CC) tandem of Per-Erik Soler and Jacob Meum opened the afternoon with an 8-4 victory over Joao Araujo (Curitiba, Puerto Rico) and Carlos Pinel (Vitoria, Espírito Santo, Brazil), as Andre Bafume and Gustavo Munhoz defeated Poplawski and Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.), 8-2. Bryce Boothby and Nizar Kuseybi posted an 8-0 win against Jesse Artrip (Cleveland, Va.) and Adam Chivers (Wilbraham, Mass.) in the third flight.
After Soler kicked off singles play with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Araujo, Poplawski answered for the Bobcats in the second flight, cutting the advantage to 4-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Meum. Bafume defeated Pinel, 6-2, 6-0 in the third flight, as Boothby rallied for a hard-fought victory at No. 4 singles, battling back for a 5-7, 7-6, 7-5 win over Choi.
Munhoz posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Artrip in the fifth flight, while Kuseybi capped the day with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Chivers.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Sunday when the Bobcats host Limestone College in league play at 12 p.m. at Avery County High School in Newland, N.C.
