Men's Track Opens Season at ASU Invitational
BOONE, NC--The LMC men's track & field team opened the indoor season at the Appalachian State Invitational this past Saturday. Competitors from 11 different colleges participated in the annual event.
The competition was tough as LMC was one of only three NCAA Division II schools participating in the meet. However, freshman Ryan Oakes (Maysville, NC) wasted no time establishing himself in the LMC record book. He vaulted to a 10th place finish in the men's pole vault with a program record jump of 14ft-7.25in. He cleared the record height on his second attempt and made three terrific attempts at 15ft-1in.
"Ryan is one of the hardest working athletes I've ever encountered in my coaching career", said Head Coach Scott Myers. "He routinely gives more effort than is expected in each workout, which is a hallmark of all great athletes."
Joining Ryan in the men's pole vault was sophomore Jonathan Arthur (Pine Level, NC). Jonathan tied his own indoor personal best height of 13ft-7.25in on his way to 13th place in the event. "These two young men will provide a powerful 1-2 punch in the men's pole vault for us throughout the season", commented Coach Myers. "It's going to be a lot of fun watching them push each other to greater heights for years to come."
Sophomore Joe Daher (Mount Dora, FL) continues his development in the men's throwing events. He finished in 15th place in the men's shot put with a throw of 42ft-1/2in.
In the 55m hurdles, a trio of Bobcat hurdlers was lead by freshman Glenn Richardson (LaPlata, MD). In his first collegiate track meet, Glenn established his collegiate personal best time of 8.49 seconds. Sophomores Brad Tanis (Midland Park NJ) and Nathan Smith (Crossnore, NC) improved on their hurdle times from last year's meet.
In the 55m dash, sophomore Adam Philips (Spruce Pine, NC) and senior Jordan Davis (Hamptonville, NC) both improved on their sprint times from last year. The men's 400m saw Brad Tanis chop 3 seconds from his race in the previous year's meet. In the long jump, sophomore Michael Connor (Durham, NC) set an indoor personal best with a leap of 20ft-5in.
Also participating on Saturday, were Danny Hogbin (Hedgesville, WV) in the high jump, Stephen Mostella (Winter Haven, FL) in the 200m and 400m, and Chris Glenn (Jonesville, SC) in the LJ, 55m, 200m.
The Bobcat track team will resume competition after the semester break.
