BLACKSBURG, VA. - The Lees-McRae College Bobcats men's track team sent six athletes, two pole-vaulters and a distance medley team, to the VT Challenge at Virginia Tech Friday and earned a first place finish and two second place finishes.
Ryan Oakes and Jon Arthur, who were trying to qualify for the 2009 Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, finished first and second in the pole vault with a height of 15'7". Oakes won the event with Arthur taking second place.
"They did not go high enough to qualify for nationals, but I was very proud of their efforts," head track and field coach Ley Fletcher said. "They hit the Provisional Qualifying Standard every time they vaulted, and they either won the event or were in the top three at every competition. That is something to proud of when they were competing against some of the best competition in Division I and Division II in the southeast."
The distance medley relay team of Brad Tanis, Luke Anton, Craig Simpkins and Michael Davis finished second with a time of 10:18:00.
"The guys ran tough in a great track environment," head distance coach Craig McPhail said. "I am really proud of their performance."
