Bobcats post strong performance at Appalachian Open

BOONE, N.C. --- Brandon Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles, while Travis Burton (Newberry, S.C.) posted a pair of top-10 performances to lead the Lees-McRae College men's track and field team to a strong showing at the Appalachian State University Open on Friday afternoon.

Eric Cloy (Ball Ground, Ga.) placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 5.91 meters, followed closely by Justin Floyd (Newton, N.C.) in sixth with a leap of 5.65 meters. Dwight Gilzene (Charlotte, N.C.) finished ninth in the shot put with a toss of 12.57 meters, as Devan Mackey (Hickory, N.C.) placed 12th with a mark of 11.58 meters.

Ryan Trask (Cobleskill, N.Y.) placed ninth in the discus throw with a mark of 35.18 meters, while Mackey and Gilzene finished 11th and 16th, respectively, with marks of 33.00 and 30.53 meters. Burton turned in a strong performance in the high jump, posting a mark of 1.82 meters, as he teamed with Williams, Razhede Highsmith (Gastonia, N.C.) and Jarrett Gibson (Marietta, Ga.) to finish fifth in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 43.16 seconds.

Michael Davis (Independence, Va.) finished third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:06.13, as Matthew MacPhail (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Jordan Meyer (Imnan, S.C.) placed ninth and 15th, respectively. Williams posted a strong performance in the 110-meter hurdles, placing fifth with a time of 15.60 seconds, while turning in a mark of 11.41 seconds to finish 14th in the 100-meter dash.

Highsmith and Burton finished 13th and 18th, respectively, in the 100-meter dash with marks of 11.36 and 11.63 seconds. Ian Harned (Pine Level, N.C.) placed fifth in the 400-meter run, turning in a time of 51.59 seconds, as Gibson and Davante Scott (Hopkins, S.C.) posted marks of 52.09 and 55.05 seconds, respectively.

Gabriel Tobias (Lenoir, N.C.) finished fourth in the 800-meter run with a mark of 2:06.17, while Burton placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a mark of 59.67 seconds. Highsmith placed 11th in the 200-meter dash, as Williams and Gibson finished 13th and 17th, respectively. Burton, Highsmith, Gibson and Harned finished second in the 4x400-meter with a time of 3:26.25.

Lees-McRae returns to action on Friday, April 19 when the Bobcats host the first day of the 2013 Conference Carolinas Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Arthur, Lauritsen and Sanders Track and Field Complex. The meet is slated to begin at 3 p.m. with the high jump and javelin competitions.
