NEW ORLEANS – The Lees-McRae College men's and women's track and field programs were selected as All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) last Thursday. The women's team finished with a team grade point average of 3.19, while the men's squad posted a 3.04 GPA during the 2016-17 academic year.
Overall, the Bobcats had eight student-athletes earn Academic All-Conference honors, while 12 more earned spots on the Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll. One of the athletes that was named to both lists was Mekayla Boswell. Boswell was named the Conference Carolinas Indoor Track and Field Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2016-17.
There were 191 teams honored by the USTFCCCA for their academics. 115 of the teams were women's squads and 76 were men's
The women of California Baptist University maintained the highest cumulative GPA of any team in NCAA Division II. The Lancers were in a class of their own with a 3.86 GPA.
Cedarville University's women finished a distant second to Cal Baptist with a GPA of 3.631, while the women of Drury University held down a GPA of 3.63.
The top cumulative GPA of any men's team belonged to Drury University with its 3.459. Bentley University finished a distant second at 3.44.
