Continuing their Missouri road trip, the Lees-McRae men's volleyball team got back in action Saturday morning against another nationally ranked NAIA team, #4 Missouri Valley. After a valiant effort, the Bobcat fell short losing in three games, 23-30, 22-30, 28-30.
Game one saw the teams neck and neck until a controversial call with the score 21-19 in favor of Missouri Valley swung the momentum to home side. Missouri Valley controlled game two as it cruised to the 2-0 lead. Not to give up, the Bobcats rallied late in game three, trying to push for a fourth game, but fell short to be swept by a nationally ranked team for the second consecutive game.
Justin Harris led the Bobcats attack with 18 kills, hitting .348 for the match. Justin Wozniel added eight kills while Grant Cassell contributed six. Elias Valentin led the team defensively with 17 digs while setter Luis Lazaballet added nine and Stephen McDaniel seven. Lazaballet, (pictured top left) also put up 36 assists while Cassell, Wozniel and Marko Jovanovic each had three block assists.
"We did not come out with as much energy as we needed against a skilled team," commented Head Coach Jamie Petrik. "Harris and Marko were very efficient at the net, but they played with more desire."
The loss drops the Bobcats record to 1-3 against nationally ranked opponents this season, and 1-4 overall. The team will hit the court Saturday afternoon trying to avoid a winless weekend when they play Peru State at 2:00pm (CST).
