After opening up the season with a 3-1 win over Eastern Mennonite, the Lees-McRae College Bobcats traveled to EMU for the return match Wednesday afternoon, coming out on the losing end of a 3-0 sweep, (19-30, 15-30, 23-30), to the Royals. EMU, currently ranked #11 in the AVCA Division III poll, improved to 11-6 while the Bobcats fall to 2-5.
The first game saw the Royals jump out to an early 4-0 lead and never look back. Justin Wozniel led the Bobcats attack with five kills, but it was not enough as the home side cruised to the win.
The Royals used the momentum from the first win to double the Bobcats in the second game, however game three saw the Bobcats come alive. Justin Harris, (pictured top left), led the way for the Bobcats with 5 kills on 11 attempts, as the raucious home crowd was silenced as it watched a new Bobcats team claw their way back to try and avoid the sweep. With the score 21-18 for the Royals, Lees-McRae would call time out, but it would be to no avail, as Brandon Ratliff scored a service ace for EMU to start a three point run that would put the game out of reach.
The Bobcats visit in-state rival Mt. Olive this Saturday for a
pair of games. Lees-McRae will play the host Trojans at noon and
then take on York College (NY) at 3:00pm.
