Men's Volleyball Suffers Sweep at Limestone, 3-0

GAFFNEY, S.C. --- The Lees-McRae men's volleyball team couldn't find its offensive rhythm in the first two sets while falling at Limestone, 20-25, 15-25, 21-25, in Conference Carolinas action Friday evening at the Timken Center in Gaffney, S.C.

The Saints (10-8, 6-5 CC) stymied LMC in the second set by swinging at a .571 clip and holding LMC to a .000 mark. The Bobcats (12-6, 4-3) suffered only their second defeat in the last nine matches.

The first set remained tight while a Matt Harpenau (Cincinnati, Ohio) block knotted the opener at 11. However, LC responded with a 4-0 run thanks to three consecutive Bobcat attack errors.

Sophomore Brady Markle (York, Pa.) notched three of his match-high 13 kills off the hands of Randy Ramirez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rio) to shave the deficit to three.

The Saints retaliated with consecutive service aces before a Joel Muhlbach block provided LC with the set.

Harpenau registered a kill to bring LMC within two, 9-7, in the second set, but the Saints used an Andrew Miller kill to cap off a 7-3 run while LC held the 16-10 advantage.

Senior Kevin Morrison (Norfolk, Va.) delivered a thunderous kill to cut the lead to four, 18-14.

LC claimed the next four points while Jon Schaefer recorded two kills before consecutive LMC attack errors ended the set.

The deciding set was much like the first set after Sam Sheers (Centerville, Ohio) tallied two kills to knot it up at 10.

Once again, the Saints ripped off a 7-2 run thanks to strong play from Nick Wildes and Eric Zaun.

Markle sparked a 5-2 run to make it 21-19 in LC's favor, but the Saints saw a trio of players collect a kill to complete the sweep.

Andrew Miller paced the Saints with 11 kills while Wildes paved the way with 27 assists. Zaun and Schaefer tallied nine kills each and LC swung .367 in the third.

Ramirez dished out 26 assists and Markle paced LMC with six digs.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow for a bout with league-leading Erskine at 3 p.m. in Due West, S.C.
