BELMONT, N.C. --- Junior John Sobel bashed out a career-high 20 kills, but the Lees-McRae men's volleyball team dropped a 19-25, 15-25, 31-29, 20-25, decision at Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolinas match at the Wheeler Center Saturday afternoon in Belmont, N.C.
The Crusaders (5-0, 3-0) remain flawless on the season and hit better than .300 in two sets while Nolan Albrecht had 19 kills. The Bobcats (0-4, 0-4) had a trio of players with at least nine kills, including a dozen from junior Mark Shayka (Hamilton, Va.).
BAC opened up a 13-8 lead in the first after a pair of Albrecht kills and a block from Dustin Buell and Gavin Schaffer.
LMC cut the deficit to one following an ace and block from Sobel (Holbrook, N.Y.).
The home squad claimed the set following a 4-0 run.
The Bobcats used a quick 3-0 run in the second to grab a 9-8 lead, thanks to kills from Shayka and Serviat.
The Crusaders bounced back and used a 17-6 run to claim the set and holding LMC to a -.190 clip.
Coach Henry Chuang's team jumped out to a 15-10 lead in an entertaining third set after sloppy play from BAC.
The Crusaders answered again and produced a 14-3 run to force match point; however, LMC rallied and tied it at 24, staving off match-point on six occasions.
Down 29-28, the Bobcats produced a 3-0 run to earn the set.
A trio of Bobcat kills forced a 17-all tie in the fourth.
BAC clamped down and finished the match on an 8-3 run while swinging a match-best .345 in the frame.
Senior Drew Blecher (York, Pa.) dished out 41 assists.
LMC travels to Erskine for a CC tilt Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. in Due West, S.C.
