LORETTO, Pa. --- Junior John Sobel smashed out a match-high 14 kills, but the Lees-McRae men's volleyball team fell to St. Francis (Pa.), 23-25, 18-25, 25-19, 13-25, in nonconference play at DeGol Arena Friday evening in Loretto, Pa.
The Red Flash (4-4) climbed to .500 on the season by swinging better than .370 in two sets while Jeff Hogan amassed 13 kills. The Bobcats (0-6) saw freshman Levi Gifford (Virginia Beach, Va.) produce a solo block and two block assists.
Sobel (Holbrook, N.Y.) and Gifford stuffed consecutive attack attempts from Hogan to jump out to a 10-5 lead in the first.
LMC led 17-13 following a kill from junior Rudy Klaas (Dakar, Senegal).
SFU rallied back with a 12-6 run and used a pair of kills from Mike Marshman to win the set.
The Red Flash led wire-to-wire in the second and led 19-10 after consecutive kills from Marshman.
LMC cut the deficit to six, 24-18, with a kill from Sobel, but Hogan notched one of his own to give the home squad the set.
The Bobcats used a well-timed ace from Mark Shayka (Hamilton, Va.) to take a 19-15 lead in the third.
Sobel contributed a pair of kills and Shayka added one while LMC claimed the set.
Marshman used consecutive aces to put SFU up 17-6 and The Red Flash cruised to the win following an ace from Xavier Krause.
LMC travels to North Greenville Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. for a Conference Carolinas tilt in Tigerville, S.C.
