MISENHEIMER, N.C. --- Five players notched three digs or more, but the Lees-McRae men's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought battle to Pfeiffer, 18-25, 24-26, 24-26, in Conference Carolinas player Wednesday evening at Merner Gym in Misenheimer, N.C.
The Falcons (9-4, 9-2 CC) swung .452 in the second while Jonathan Martinez amassed four aces and eight kills in the contest. The Bobcats (0-12, 0-10) used double digit kills from Mark Shayka (Hamilton, Va.) and John Sobel (Holbrook, N.Y.).
PU took an 11-6 lead after a trio of Bobcat attack errors and pushed the lead to seven, 14-7, after consecutive aces from Martinez.
LMC's Sobel tallied a kill before Shayka did the same while cutting the deficit to five, 19-14.
Shayka (12) and Sobel (11) led the squad in kills on the night.
The Falcons claimed the set after kills from Evan Blair and Fabio Diniz.
LMC grabbed an 8-4 lead to open the second. Rudy Klaas (Dakar, Senegal) delivered an ace prior to a trio of kills by Sobel and Shayka.
PU responded with a 12-8 run to knot the contest at 16.
Coach Henry Chuang's offense got rolling behind a Keenan Freitas (Hilo, Hawaii) kill and two from Shayka.
LMC had game point late in the set after a kill. However, PU used a 3-0 run to eek out the set.
Senior Drew Blecher (York, Pa.) and Sobel stuffed a Martinez attack before a Shayka kill put LMC up 12-8.
The Falcons took an 18-16 lead after using a 10-4 run.
Freshman Levi Gifford (Virginia Beach, Va.) impressed late with an ace and a kill while his team took a 22-20 advantage.
The Bobcats reached game point again after a bad set from Harrison Lutz. PU's Diniz registered a kill to spark a 3-0 run to win the set.
Blecher dished out 23 assists while Freitas had six digs.
LMC welcomes Alderson Broaddus Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium.
