Men's Volleyball Falls Twice at Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. --- The Lees-McRae men's volleyball team suffered sweeps to Coker and Alderson Broaddus Friday evening at DeLoach Center in Hartsville, S.C.

Coker 3, Lees-McRae 0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-18)
The Cobras (9-5) had four players with six kills or more while the team swung at a .385 clip in the first set. The Bobcats (0-14) had three players five or more kills, led by junior John Sobel (Holbrook, N.Y.) with eight.

Coker took an early 4-1 lead after consecutive attack errors from LMC.

The Bobcats responded with a 6-0 run, capped off by a kill from Hector Serviat (Miami, Fla.).

The Cobras ripped off a 15-6 run grab a 19-13 lead, thanks to two kills from Luke Grupe. CC's Andrew Washam delivered three kills to close out the set.

Coker led wire-to-wire in the second, despite consecutive kills from Sobel and one from Rudy Klaas (Dakar, Senegal) late in the frame.

Coker used a 7-0 run to rally back from a 5-4 deficit in the third.

The Bobcats fought tough and cut the lead to three on multiple occasions, but strong from the Cobras' Colton Parson ended the threat.

Junior Keenan Freitas (Hilo, Hawaii) paced LMC with six digs while senior Drew Blecher (York, Pa.) dished out 22 assists.

The Battlers (6-7) hit .318 in the first set while Obenda Besongngem led all players with 13 kills. The Bobcats (0-15) enjoyed a 12-dig performance from Freitas.

ABU jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead in the first, but, coach Henry Chuang's squad took advantage of a Sobel ace and Levi Gifford (Virginia Beach, Va.) kill to tie it at nine.

Both teams would exchange points while a bad set from ABU kept it tied, 13.

The Battlers finished the set on a 12-1 run to claim it.

Junior Mark Shayka (Hamilton, Va.) mashed out a pair of kills before a Klaas ace gave LMC a 9-6 lead in the second.

ABU retaliated with a 12-5 run to grab an 18-14 advantage.

Despite kills from Shayka and Klaas, ABU would grab the set.

The Bobcats took an 11-4 run to open the third following a block from Blecher and Serviat.

The Battlers' Will Ruiz and Francisco Cabrera combined for four kills to spark a rally that would eventually lead to ABU winning the set.

LMC travels to Emmanuel (Ga.) Saturday, March 5 at 2 p.m. for a Conference Carolinas tilt in Franklin Springs, Ga.
