BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Junior John Sobel delivered 13 kills and Keenan Freitas turned in a match-high 11 digs while the Lees-McRae men's volleyball team fell 18-25, 21-25, 20-25, to North Greenville in Conference Carolinas action Wednesday evening at Williams Gymnasium in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Crusaders (12-13, 7-10 CC) swung at a .306 clip in the match while Alexander Schinzing dished out 33 assists. The Bobcats (1-22, 0-15) had three players with six or more kills.
Along with Sobel's (Holbrook, N.Y.) 13, Mark Shayka (Hamilton, Va.) and Hector Serviat (Miami, Fla.) accrued six kills apiece.
NGU staked itself to a 9-6 lead in the first following a Matthew McManaway kill.
Sobel, Shayka and senior Drew Blecher (York, Pa.) used a kill each to produce a 5-2 run to tie it at 11.
The Crusaders responded with a 9-3 run, capped off by another McManaway kill, 20-14.
The Bobcats staved off game point with a block from Blecher, Shayka and Jack Frank (Tampa, Fla.), 24-18, but NGU's Luuga Vailu'u delivered one of his 13 kills to close out the set.
LMC grabbed a 9-6 lead in the second following two kills from Sobel and one from Rudy Klaas (Dakar, Senegal).
NGU ripped off a 13-5 run to grab a 19-14 advantage while Vailu'u contributed a trio of kills.
Blecher earned an ace before a pair of Crusader errors cut the deficit to two, 23-21.
NGU claimed the last two points to win the set.
Leading by two, the Crusaders tallied a 6-0 run, capped off by an ace from Aaron Campbell.
The visitors eventually won the set following a pair of kills from two different players.
Blecher dished out 26 assists and had five digs.
Frank finished with four kills and a block assist.
LMC welcomes Mount Olive Friday, April 8 at 7 p.m. for a CC match in Williams Gym.
