BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team released its 2017 schedule Friday morning. The Bobcats are scheduled to play 26 matches, including 12 at Williams Gymnasium.
"I´m very excited about our schedule this year," said LMC Head Coach Henry Chaung. "We´re extremely blessed to have the administrative support to have the opportunity to play teams from the MPSF, EIVA and MIVA, and be able to get a good assessment of where we are during the rebuilding process of our program here at Lees-McRae."
The Bobcats will open the 2017 season with a pair of matches at home against Lincoln Memorial and Charleston on Jan. 13-14. After these two tilts, LMC will hit the road for two at Alderson Broaddus and Charleston. Lees-McRae will close out January hosting King (Tenn.) (Jan. 25) in its conference opener and traveling to Lincoln Memorial on Jan. 27.
After spending the entire month of February playing Conference Carolinas competition, the Bobcats will step outside the league to compete in a tournament at Penn State March 3-4. In the tournament LMC will take on Stanford and UC Santa Barbara.
"The strength and future of our program lies in our ability to play and compete with the bigger Division I universities," Chaung said. "The addition of the Big West Conference sponsoring men´s volleyball shows an exciting time in the growth of the men´s game. We need to play and learn to compete with the best to become a contender on the national level. I think playing teams like Stanford and UC-Santa Barbara will help us gain the experience and confidence we need to be able to move up in the ranks of the Conference Carolinas."
After their trip to Penn State, the Bobcats will have home matches against Lindenwood (March 11), Belmont Abbey (March 21), Erskine (March 24) and Emmanuel (GA) (March 25). Following the match with Emmanuel, LMC will close out its regular season with four on the road.
The first round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament will take place April 18 at the top four seeds. After the opening round, the four winners will head to the top remaining seed for the semifinals and finals on April 21-22.
"This will be a fun season for our five seniors to go out on, and a valuable opportunity for the freshmen class to gain experience in competing in big matches," said Chaung.
