BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team battled against league-leading Mount Olive at Williams Gymnasium Saturday but came up short, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-20). The loss is the second straight for LMC as its record dips to 4-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
Set 1: Lees-McRae gave UMO all it could handle in the opening set. The Bobcats took a 21-20 lead late in the frame forcing the Trojans to take a timeout. Following the timeout, however, the Trojans scored five of the next six points to take set one, 25-22.
Set 2: Mount Olive scored the first six points in the second forcing the Bobcats to dig out of an early hole. LMC came storming back to tie the score at seven. Despite the best efforts by Lees-McRae, it had troubles trying to slow down UMO's offense as it hit .435 on 23 attempts in the frame. With their offense firing on all cylinders, the Trojans were able to take a 2-0 lead on LMC with a 25-19 set victory.
Set 3: After trading the first six points of the set, UMO extended its lead to as many as five points, which turned out to be the winning margin in the third set, 25-20.
John Sobel led LMC with 13 kills and added three block assists Saturday. Wes Rogman also finished with double-digit kills with 10 and also notched seven digs. Defensively, Keenan Freitas totaled 13 digs to pace the Bobcats' defenders.
LMC will return to action Wednesday when it hosts Limestone in another Conference Carolinas matchup. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
