BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team picked up its sixth 3-0 victory of the 2017 season Friday evening when it swept Erskine College (28-26, 25-20, 25-18) at Banner Elk Elementary. The win improves LMC's record to 8-13 overall and 6-7 in conference play.
Set 1: Neither team could gain much of a lead in the first set of the match as no lead was more than two points at any point during the frame. Fortunately for the Bobcats, they scored three straight points to turn a 26-25 deficit into a 28-26 victory in the first.
A key in the victory for LMC was its ability to keep Erskine's attacks alive or send them back. Lees-McRae notched three total blocks and out-dug the Flying Fleet 11-6 in the frame. Keenan Freitas posted five digs, while Karl Deichmann and Reto Pfund both had a pair of block assists.
Set 2: Variety was key in LMC's 25-20 win in the second set. Five of the seven players that saw action in the frame had at least two kills. Three of the five had three kills each and they were Hector Serviat, Wes Rogman and Deichamann.
Set 3: The Bobcats saved their best for last Friday as they hit .524 on 21 attempts with 13 kills to seal the 3-0 sweep over the Flying Fleet. LMC was led in the frame by Mark Shayka and Rogman who combined for eight kills in 13 attacks.
Next Up: Lees-McRae will look to end its home schedule on a high note Saturday when it hosts Emmanuel (GA) at Banner Elk Elementary School. Prior to the match, the Bobcats will honor their five seniors: Mark Shayka, John Sobel, Rudy Klass, Keenan Freitas and Dominick Hamilton. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
