MUNCIE, Ind. – No. 14 Ball State knocked off the Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team in three sets Friday evening (25-19, 25-16, 25-10) in the Bobcats' season opener of 2018.
Set 1 – In the opening stanza of the match, the Bobcats had trouble slowing down the Cardinals' offense. Ball State hit .406 as a team with 17 kills in the first. Despite the hot-hitting by Ball State, Lees-McRae was able to hang around through the play of freshman Robert Bowling who totaled six of the team's 10 kills. The Cardinals were able to persevere though as they won the first set, 25-19.
Set 2 – Ball State continued its momentum in the second set. BSU did not allow the Bobcats to get on much of a run offensively. LMC managed to score back-to-back points on just two occasions in the second set. Due to the stop-start nature of their offense, the Bobcats couldn't keep up with the fourteenth-ranked Cardinals as they went to take the second frame, 25-16.
Set 3 – The third set was all Ball State as it hit .696 with 17 kills in the frame. The hot-hitting Cardinals cruised to a 25-10 win to clinch the three-set win over the Bobcats. Junior Hector Serviat paced LMC in the third with a pair of kills.
Stat Standouts – Bowling and fellow freshman Joseph Valdez put together solid performances in their collegiate debuts. Bowling paced LMC with seven kills, while Valdez dished out 20 assists and picked up two of the three aces by the Bobcats in the match. Defensively, LMC was led by Chris Woolslayer with eight digs and Serviat with three total blocks.
Next Up – The Bobcats will wrap up their first weekend of competition in 2018 with a matchup at Fort Wayne Saturday night. First serve between the Mastodons and Lees-McRae is set for 7 p.m.
