HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team picked up a four-set win (33-31, 25-27, 25-23, 25-19) over Thompson Rivers University Friday night in Honolulu. The victory boosts LMC's record to 2-7 on the season.
Set 1 – The Bobcats looked like they may run away with the opening set of Friday night's match by leading by as many as seven points. Thompson Rivers, however, came back to force the frame into extra points. Lees-McRae persevered to win the opening set, 33-31.
Set 2 – Like it did in the opening set, Lees-McRae got out to a lead. Unlike the first, though, Thompson Rivers came back to tie the score at 24-24. After that point, the Wolfpack rattled off three straight points to take the second frame, 27-25.
Set 3 – Both squads performed well in the third frame offensively. Lees-McRae hit .385, while Thompson Rivers was not far behind hitting .333. With the two teams hitting relatively for the same percentage, the third stanza went down to the wire. The Wolfpack committed a pair of errors after the score was knotted at 23 to give the Bobcats the 25-23 victory.
Set 4 – In what proved to be the final set of Friday's match, the trends of the match suddenly turned. Lees-McRae was able to get an early lead and hold it basically for the duration of the fourth as it finished off its second victory of the season, 25-19.
Stat Standouts – Wes Rogman paced LMC in both kills and digs against the Wolfpack with 14 kills and eight digs. On top of the performance by Rogman, the Bobcats also performed very well from the service line with 16 aces on the night. Joseph Valadez totaled five of those aces, while Ethan Gardner and Hector Serviat chipping in four aces as well.
Next Up – Lees-McRae will wrap up its trip to Honolulu Saturday night when it takes on Academy United in an exhibition contest. Saturday's match is scheduled for a 9 p.m. Eastern Time first serve.
