BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team picked up its first Conference Carolinas victory of the season Wednesday night at Williams Gymnasium as the Bobcats downed North Greenville in four sets (27-25, 21-25, 26-24, 25-23). The victory boosts LMC's record to 3-19 overall and 1-12 in league action.
Set 1 – The opening set of Wednesday's contest was powered by the two offenses. Both squads hit .323 or better in the frame. LMC held the slight edge in the first hitting .345 compared to a .323 mark put forth by NGU. The small advantage proved to be enough as the Bobcats picked up a 25-23 win in the first. The set victory was powered in part by the play of LMC's two middle blockers Hector Serviat and Ethan Gardner. As a tandem, the duo had seven kills on nine attempts with just one attack error in the first.
Set 2 – The hot-hitting offenses cooled off considerably in the second set. North Greenville ended up knotting the match at a set a piece thanks to outhitting LMC .226 to .087 and outdoing the Bobcats on the block three to one. The Crusaders, who had a pair of players tally five kills each in the second, won the frame, 25-21.
Set 3 – It looked like North Greenville may take control of the match in the third as it held a five-point lead at 17-12. The Bobcats, however, rattled off five straight points to tie the score at 17 a side. LMC and NGU would trade turns with the lead until the score read 24-24. The Crusaders committed a pair of attack errors to give the third frame to the Bobcats, 26-24.
Set 4 – In what proved to be the final set of the contest, the Bobcats and Crusaders put together their most competitive set of the match. No team led by more than four points through the entirety of the frame. The score was tied at 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 before Lees-McRae picked up back-to-back points to finish off its first league win of the season, 25-23.
Next Up – The Bobcats will return to action at Williams Gymnasium on Friday when they host Mount Olive. First serve for that match is set for 7 p.m.
