BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team will wrap up its 2018 regular season Friday night with a conference tilt against Erskine at Williams Gymnasium. First serve between the two teams is set for 7 p.m.
Last Time Out – The Co-Conference Carolinas regular season champion Barton College swept the Bobcats last Saturday in Banner Elk (25-18, 26-24, 25-15). The loss moved LMC's record to 3-21 overall and 1-14 within the conference.
National Recognition – Freshman libero Michael Wahl earned some recognition Tuesday afternoon as he was named the Off the Block/Molton National Libero of the Week. Wahl is the second Bobcat player to receive a player of the week honor this season joining fellow freshman Robert Bowling who earned the Conference Carolinas Player of the Week honor back in January.
Snapping the Skid – LMC picked up its first league win of the season last Wednesday when it upended North Greenville in four sets. The Bobcats were led by the duo of Wahl and Ethan Gardner. Wahl finished with a season-high 14 digs against NGU, while Gardner hit .786 on 14 attacks with 12 kills.
Postseason Primer – Even with one match to go in the regular season, the Bobcats already know their postseason destination. LMC will make the short trip down the mountain to rival King University next Tuesday in the opening round of the Conference Carolinas tournament. It marks the first time since the 2013 and 2014 seasons that the team has made the postseason in back-to-back seasons.
About Erskine – Erskine enters Friday's match at Williams Gymnasium with a record of 7-18 overall and 4-11 in conference action in 2018. The Flying Fleet have been a much different team at home as opposed to on the road as six of their seven victories have come at home. Individually, Erskine has been led by Daniel Hermida. Hermida paces the team with 233 kills and has notched 42 aces on the 2018 campaign.
Series Rewind vs. Erskine – Lees-McRae is 2-9 all-time against Erskine. The Flying Fleet swept the Bobcats earlier this season down in Due West, South Carolina (25-15, 25-19, 25-22). However, the Bobcats beat Erskine the last time they visited Banner Elk last season, 3-0.
