BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team dropped three-set decision to North Greenville (19-25, 18-25, 25-27) Saturday afternoon at Williams Gymnasium. The loss pushes Lees-McRae's record to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in Conference Carolinas action.
Set 1 – The opening set of Saturday's match was a back-and-forth one. North Greenville started the tilt scoring seven of the first 10 points to gain an early advantage on the Bobcats. Lees-McRae would rally though going on a 5-0 run to pull back in front, 8-7. The difference in the opening set was NGU's ability to notch kills in key moments. The Crusaders finished the first set with 12 kills compared to seven for Lees-McRae. That difference in kill numbers accounted for nearly the entire winning margin for NGU as it won the first frame, 25-19.
Set 2 – After winning the first set, North Greenville kicked things into another gear in the second set. As a team, the Crusaders hit an unreal .600 for the set with 14 kills. The Bobcats countered with their best offensive set of the match attacking at a .263 clip, but it proved to be not enough as the Crusaders went on to take the frame, 25-18.
Set 3 – In what proved to be the final set of Saturday's match, the two teams matched each other nearly point for point. Overall, the score was tied at 14 different points during the third set, including at 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. With the scoreboard reading 25-25, North Greenville notched back-to-back aces to finish off the match, 27-25.
Stat standouts – Offensively, the Bobcats were led Saturday by freshman Drew Sims. Sims scored a total of 9.5 points with seven kills and two-and-half blocks. Hector Serviat and Tyler Dorfman posted six kills each as well. Defensively, Chris Woolslayer racked up 10 digs in the three-set contest.
Next up – Lees-McRae will be back in action Wednesday when it plays host to Belmont Abbey in another conference matchup. First serve between the Bobcats and Crusaders is set for 7 p.m.
