Bobcats fall in four on the road at Erskine Saturday

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team fell in four sets (16-25, 23-25, 25-15, 16-25) on the road at Erskine Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas action. The loss moves Lees-McRae's record to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in league play.

Set 1 – Erskine definitely came out ready to play in Saturday's opening set. The Flying Fleet scored seven of the first eight and 11 of the first 14 points of first set. Unfortunately, the early hole proved too large for Lees-McRae to dig out of as the Flying Fleet won the first set, 25-16.  

Set 2 – After a somewhat lopsided first set, the second frame was much more contested. The score was knotted up at seven different points in stanza, including at 20 and 21. With the score tied at 21, Erskine used four kills from Griffin Spence and another from Keegan Sullivan to score four of the last six points to close out the frame, 25-23.

Set 3 – Facing a three-set defeat, the Bobcats rallied to win the third, 25-15. With the score reading 12-12, Lees-McRae went on two separate 5-0 runs to win the frame going away by 10 points. In the third, Lees-McRae hit a match-best .474 on 19 attacks, which marked the team's highest hitting percentage in a single set this season.

Set 4 – In what proved to be the final set of Saturday's match, the Flying Fleet answered Lees-McRae's hot-hitting offense in the third with a stellar outing of their own in the fourth. As a team, Erskine attacked the Bobcat defense at a .357 clip with 12 kills to go along with just two attack errors on its way to closing out the match, 25-16.

Stat standouts – Drew Sims led Lees-McRae scoring 13.5 points Saturday. Sims totaled nine kills, two aces and five block assists to account for his point total. Setting up Sims and the rest of the Bobcat offense was Nick Cookingham. Cookingham dished out 34 assists to go along with six digs and six block assists as well. Rounding out the stat leaders for the Bobcats Saturday was Chris Woolslayer. Woolslayer totaled a season-high eight kills and paced the team-high 10 digs.

Next up – Lees-McRae will return to action next Saturday when it plays host to Limestone College at Williams Gymnasium. First serve between the Bobcats and Saints is set for 3 p.m.
