BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College men's volleyball team fell in three sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-19) to Barton College Saturday afternoon at Williams Gymnasium in its regular season finale.
Set 1 – The Bulldogs got the lead at 3-2 and never looked back as they went on to win the first set of Saturday's match, 25-19. Barton attacked at a .407 clip in the first frame with 13 kills. Lees-McRae attacked at a respectable .259 number but the differential proved too large for the Bobcats to overcome in the opening stanza.
Set 2 – Lees-McRae came back for the second set and outdueled the league-leading Bulldogs in kills (11 to 9). Junior Chris Woolslayer, who served as the team's libero in the match's other two sets, went to outside hitter and led the Bobcats with three kills in the second. Even with Woolslayer and the other Bobcats attacking well, the Bulldogs pulled away from Lees-McRae due in part to 15 errors by the Bobcats winning the set, 25-20.
Set 3 – At one point it looked like the Bobcats may stay alive in the match against Barton. After a block put up by Nick Cookingham and Ethan Gardner, the Bobcats led the Bulldogs, 13-10. However, Barton went on a white hot run after that point scoring 10 straight points on the Bobcats. That major swing in momentum ultimately led the Bulldogs to finish off Saturday's match, 25-19.
Stat Standouts – The Bobcats had a few different players put a stellar cap on the 2019 campaign on Saturday. Drew Sims led Lees-McRae with eight kills on 12 attacks, while Gardner finished the afternoon with six kills of his own while attacking at a .364 clip. Defensively, Woolslayer led the charge totaling nine digs against Barton.
Next Up – Saturday's loss puts a cap on the 2019 season for the Bobcats. Lees-McRae, which finished the season, 2-21 overall and 0-16 in conference play, is scheduled to return all but one player from this season's team for 2020 with the lone departure being senior Hector Serviat.
