Young Bobcats Gain Race Experience
BOONE, N.C.- The 2008 version of men's cross country at Lees-McRae got their season underway Friday night in the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State University at the Greenway Trail in Boone, N.C.
The Bobcats have nine new faces as they opened up against the
likes of Florida State, Clemson, UNCC, North Florida and
"We are young and inexperienced in the 8k distance, so we'll have some growing pains as we learn how to race and pace this distance," said Head Coach Craig McPhail.
Leading the way for the Bobcats was freshman Craig Simpkins (Boiling Springs, S.C.) with a time of 28 minutes over the five mile course. Transfer Nate Trimble (Houston, Texas) was second on the team with a time of 28:19, while freshman Michael Davis (Independence, Va.) was third in a time of 28:28. Jon Bernal (Oakton, Va.) was fourth and Chris Holstein (Middleburg, Fla.) fifth both in a time of 28:46.
"I think the guys were anxious and did not know what all to expect. Our training has been good, and I expect us to make some serious improvements in our next race," McPhail said.
The Bobcats will train over the next month as they prepare for The Citadel Invite in Charleston, S.C., September 26th.
