Bobcats Take Step in Right Direction at Blue Ridge Open
BOONE, N.C. - The Lees-McRae Bobcats took a step in the right direction with a 17th place finished out of 26 teams made up of a mix of Division I and Division II teams at the Blue Ridge Open Men's Cross Country 8k Race at Appalachian State University this past Friday.
In the two races, the Gold event and the Open event, the Bobcats ran well. In the Gold event, the Bobcats had seven runners, and in the Open event, the Bobcats had three freshman runners compete.
Nathan Trimble (Spring, Texas) led the Bobcats with a 26:53 to finish 93rd in the Gold event. The time was a season best for Trimble.
Freshman Cody Hodgins (Charlotte, N.C.) ran a 27:23 to finish 121st. Junior Chris Holstein of Middleburg, Fla. and freshman Craig Simpkins of Boilings Springs, S.C. both ran a 27:29 and tied for 128th. Jon Bernal (Oakton, Va.) ran 27:56 (152nd), and Luke Anton (Hendersonville, N.C.) ran 28:31 (176th). Matthew Barrett finished with a 28:44 (182nd) to round out the rest of the Bobcat runners. There were a total of 210 runners in the Gold event.
In the Open event, Michael Davis (Independence, Va.) ran a 28:49 (48th). Connor Gray (Christiansburg, Va.) finished in 29:03 (57th), and Jordon Gillespie (Fries, Va.) ran 29:20 (53rd). There were a total of 95 runners in the Open event.
"This was another step in right direction for us," head coach Craig McPhail said. "The hard work and dedication is paying off, so we should be ready to surprise people in the next three weeks."
The Bobcats race next in the Conference Carolinas meet Saturday, October 25th at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C.
