BOONE, N.C. --- Craig Simpkins (Boiling Springs, N.C.) led the Lees-McRae College men's cross country team to a 13th-place finish at the Blue Ridge Open Friday, as the Bobcats placed ahead of several prominent NCAA Division I programs.
Simpkins crossed the finish line in 61st place with a time of 26:21.8 to pace the Bobcats, who finished first among NCAA Division II schools and just ahead of Georgia State (NCAA I) and Lenoir-Rhyne University in the team competition.
Sondre Thorbegsen (Tranoy, Norway) crossed the finish-line second for the Lees-McRae men in 80th place with a time of 26:41.4; Jared Lupton (Nampa, Idaho), Austin High (Chesnee, S.C.), and Will McCoy (Southern Pines, N.C.) rounded out the top five performers for the Bobcats.
Lupton (28:04.0/128), High (28:21.9/132), and McCoy (28:55.2/140) each turned in sub 29-minute times for the 8k race. Jordan Gillespie (Fries, Va.) wrapped up the Lees-McRae finishers in the Blue Ridge Open Gold Division race with a 30:19.3 pace, placing him 151st overall.
In the women's competition, Hannah Henderson (Canvas, W. Va.) turned in a 13th place finish to pace the Lady Bobcats. Henderson's 20:14.3 placed her just outside the top ten against some of the top runners from a number of NCAA Division I programs in the Open division.
Heather Peterman (Buford, Ga.) and Crystal Fischer (Greer, S.C.) rounded out the field for the Lady Bobcats, finishing 42nd and 43rd respectively with times of 22:46.4 and 22:47.4 to close out the LMC scoring.
The Bobcats hit the trail again on October 23, traveling to Lenoir, N.C. for the Lenoir Rhyne Invitational.
