Bobcats win inaugural Team Sportsmanship Award

HIGH POINT, N.C. --- Lees-McRae College is the recipient of the inaugural Conference Carolinas Team Sportsmanship Award for the sport of men's cross country, announced league officials Tuesday.

The award, which was introduced prior to the 2010 fall season, recognizes one conference team from each sport that demonstrates the best sportsmanship, as voted on by member coaches and student-athletes throughout the league.

Lees-McRae (men's cross country), Belmont Abbey College (women's cross country), Queens University of Charlotte (men's soccer), Converse College (women's soccer), and Erksine College (women's volleyball) each garnered the inaugural honor in the aforementioned sport.

The Bobcats enjoyed a tremendous season this fall, finishing third in the conference championship meet before turning in an impressive eighth-place performance at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championships.

Junior Craig Simpkins (Boiling Springs, S.C.) capped a fantastic season with a 21st-place showing at the regional, fresh off a career-best and school-record time of 25:19 at the conference championships, which earned him a sixth-place finish and a spot on the all-Conference Carolinas Second Team. The all-Conference Carolinas Academic Team selection recorded four top-10 finishes this season, including a third-place showing at the Stampede at the Shoals in September.

Lees-McRae is expected to return 10 lettermen from the men's team, including all-Conference Carolinas Second Team selection Simpkins.
