Royals hold for sweep of Bobcats

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Kristen Oakes (Lenoir, N.C.) and Brooke Sheridan (Rosman, N.C.) each tallied two hits, and Kierstie Moon (Oxford, Ga.) drove in two runs to pace the Lees-McRae College softball team on Sunday afternoon, as Queens University of Charlotte held on for a 3-2 victory in game two to sweep a Conference Carolinas doubleheader.

Queens (22-19, 13-7 CC) scored 11 runs on 15 hits in the twin-bill, taking game one by a tally of 8-0 in five innings, before winning the night cap, 3-2. Lees-McRae (7-40, 2-18 CC) posted eight hits on the day.

Oakes and Sheridan both tallied two hits, as Hanna Huckabee (Oak Ridge, N.C.), Sadie Lagle (Harmony, N.C.), Lori Fulmer (Prosperity, S.C.) and Moon each added a base knock. Moon drove in two runs for the Bobcats, while Sheridan and Huckabee each scored for the Bobcats. Oakes went the distance in both games, striking out five and walking three in 10 innings of work.

Six players recorded a multi-hit day for Queens, as Amanda Meade, Emma Schultz, Kaitlyn Cheek, Noemi Rodriguez, Whitney Britt and Robyn Levine each picked up two base knocks. Rodriguez drove in a team-high three runs to go along with a home run, while Schultz and Britt each tallied two RBI.

Lyndey McCurry took the ball in game one, tossing a one-hit shutout through five innings while striking out three. Ashley Rollins got the nod in game two, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out two through seven frames.

Game One: Queens 8, Lees-McRae 0 – 5 innings (Box Score)

The opener remained scoreless until the bottom of the third, taking a 5-0 lead on a two-run double by Britt and a two-run single by Rodriguez. The Royals would three in the fourth, pushing the advantage to 8-0 following an RBI single by Levine.

Game Two: Queens 3, Lees-McRae 2 (Box Score)

Queens got on the board first in the second, taking an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Rodriguez, before Emily Poulton and Cheek pushed the advantage to 3-0 with a pair of run-scoring singles in the third.

The Royals would hold the three-run lead until the top of the seventh, when Huckabee and Sheridan reached on back-to-back singles to start the inning. Jessica Smith (Gastonia, N.C.) then moved Sheridan to second with a sacrifice, putting runners on second and third with one out.

Moon came through in the clutch two batters later, singling to left to score Huckabee and Sheridan and to cut the lead to 3-2. The Royals would stop the bleeding and quell the rally shortly thereafter, holding on for the narrow one-run victory following an inning-ending groundout.

Lees-McRae is expected to return to 11 letter-winners from this year's squad, including rising seniors Fulmer, Smith, Lauren Lewis (Concord, N.C.), Hollie Crickenberger (Boydton, Va.), and Alison Armstrong (Bellingham, Mass.). The Bobcats' non-conference doubleheader against Lenoir-Rhyne University. scheduled for Monday, has been canceled.
