LMC Drops Pair at Newberry in Softball Action

NEWBERRY, S.C. --- The Lees-McRae softball team fell victim to a big inning in each game of its doubleheader while falling 11-1 and 10-2 to Newberry Saturday afternoon at Smith Road Complex in Newberry, S.C.

The Wolves (2-0) pitching staff struck out 11 batters in the first game before exploding for 12 hits in the second. The Bobcats (0-2) committed three errors in each contest.

In game one, LMC drew first blood when Lori Fulmer (Prosperity, S.C.) reached on an error and advanced to third following two wild illegal pitches. Fulmer would score on a wild pitch when Sadie Lagle (Harmony, N.C.) drew a walk.

Newberry wasted no time when it responded with a seven-spot in the bottom of the opening frame. The first two runners reached via a single and hit by pitch before Gabby Bedard grounded out to short while Ashlyn Ayres scored the equalizer.

Hailey Drawe knocked in a pair of runs to extend the lead to 3-1 before a Madison Tepfanhart double plated another run. The Wolves would strike for three more runs to hold a 7-1 advantage after an inning.

Newberry's Paige Brugh collected a RBI via sacrifice fly in the bottom of third.

Darrian Jamison delivered a three-run blast in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to 11-1.

The Bobcat offense was unable to muster a rally and fell in five innings.

Lagle and Kendall Fowler (Buford, Ga.) registered a hit each while Charlie Dutton (0-1) (Monroe, Ga.) took the loss after giving up eight earned runs in three innings of work.

In the second game, Bedard cranked an RBI triple to give the home squad an early 1-0 advantage after an inning.

Newberry plated five runs in the bottom of the third thanks to three homers, including back-to-back shots from Jamison and Drawe.

LMC's Alison Armstrong (Bellingham, Mass.) and Lagle collected a RBI in the fourth and fifth, respectively, to cut the deficit to four, 6-2.

However, another Drawe homer started a four-run fifth for the Wolves while they claimed a 10-2 victory.

Freshman Celeste Sheppard (0-1) (East Julian, N.C.) earned the loss after allowing six runs in three innings of work.

Stallings and Fulmer paced the team offensively with a pair of hits apiece.

LMC returns to action Sunday afternoon when it travels to face Anderson (S.C.) in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
