Barton Plays Spoiler on Softball Senior Day
BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Lees-McRae sophomore Sadie Lagle continued her torrid 2014 season with a RBI double in game one, but LMC fell 3-1 to Barton and suffered a 3-0 loss in game two Saturday afternoon at LMC Softball Field on Senior Day in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Bulldogs (17-16, 6-5-1 CC) spoiled LMC Senior Day with a leadoff homer in game one before falling an out short of a no-hitter in game two. The Bobcats (8-33, 3-9) honored Jessica Smith (Gastonia, N.C.), Hollie Crickenberger (Boydton, Va.), Alison Armstrong (Bellingham, Mass.) and Lori Fulmer (Prosperity, S.C.) prior to the contest.
Game 1 – Barton 3, LMC 1
BC wasted no time when Megan Kelly connected on a leadoff blast to open up play. Crickenberger settled in and quickly and struck out the side.
The Bobcats answer when Valerie Hickey (Umatilla, Fla.) drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the frame and motored around to score when Lagle cranked a double off the wall in left center.
In the top of the third, Rachel Jordan reached on a fielding error and would eventually score on a RBI double from Amber Weaver.
The Bulldogs' Alex Baylis used her speed to plate BC's third run after reaching on a bunt single and swiping second. Kelly struck again and plated Baylis with a looping single to left.
Freshman Charlie Dutton (Monroe, Ga.) produced a solid four innings of work while she scattered four hits and struck out two in relief of Crickenberger.
Four Bobcats registered a hit in the contest while Kelly went 3-for-4 for BC.
Game 2 – Barton 3, LMC 0
Freshman Celeste Sheppard (East Julian, N.C.) cruised through the first two innings without allowing a runner.
The Bulldogs drew first blood when Baylis pestered the Bobcats with another single and stolen base. This time Sydney Speight did the work while hitting a run-scoring single that didn't leave the infield.
BC plated two more runs in the fifth when an errant throw allowed Crystal Britton to score from first while Baylis reached third on the play.
Kelly delivered again with a RBI single to short.
Bulldog starting pitcher Ashlyn Reagan kept LMC at bay and carried a no-no into the seventh.
A heads up decision from head coach Merritt Yackey paid off when Armstrong came in as a pinch hitter and roped a single up the middle with two outs in the seventh. However, the senior was unable to score while BC completed the sweep.
The Bobcats welcome Limestone for a doubleheader Sunday starting at 2 p.m. at LMC Softball Field.
