GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Lees-McRae softball dropped a doubleheader to Tusculum, 4-0, 6-2, in nonconference action Friday afternoon at Red Edmonds Field in Greeneville, Tenn.
Tusculum 4, Lees-McRae 0
The Pioneers (6-5) picked up the win with a complete game shutout from Cayla Cecil (3-0) while three players recorded a multi-hit game. The Bobcats (1-6) used two-hit performances from Sarah Stallings (Greensboro, N.C.) and Noel Cassidy (Myrtle Beach, S.C.).
TC's Robin Stoner led the offense with two doubles and a pair of RBI while the team amassed seven stolen bases.
Junior Charlie Dutton (Monroe, Ga.) suffered the tough luck loss by allowing two earned runs in five innings of work.
The Bobcats threatened in the first after loading the bases with no out. Freshman Kara Cunningham (Indian Trail, N.C.) opened play with a single to center before an Emily Merriam (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) walk and Cassidy single.
Cecil was able to wiggle out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts and groundout.
Stoner staked the Pioneers to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after an RBI double, allowing Carolyn Williamson to score.
TC pushed the lead to 2-0 following a fielding error. Harper Ford tapped the plate after pinching running and stealing second before taking third on a wild pitch.
The Pioneers doubled their lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a trio of hits. Stoner drove in Taylor Battle with a double. Stoner scored on the next play following an Emily Hester single and Bobcat fielding error.
LMC's Teresa Dickson (Lexington, N.C.) notched her first hit of the season in the top of the seventh. Stallings followed suit with a single of her own. Cecil worked out of the situation with a trio of groundouts.
Tusculum 6, Lees-McRae 2
The Pioneers (7-5) took advantage of a three RBI game from Hester and another gem from Cecil (4-0). The Bobcats' (1-7) Cunningham (0-4) suffered the loss after allowing five runs (zero earned) in three innings of work.
Much like the first contest, Cunningham and Merriam reached in the first. Cunningham singled to open play before stealing third after a walk and eventually scoring on a throwing error.
TC did most of its damage in the third when it plated five runs.
The Pioneers tallied five hits and took advantage of an error in the frame. Hester delivered the big blow with a two-run double to center. All the runs in the inning were unearned.
Hester pushed the lead to 6-1 after a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth.
The Bobcats scratched across a run in the top of the sixth thanks to a fielding error. LMC loaded the bases with two outs after singles from Brea Lawson (King, N.C.) and Karly McRary (Marion, N.C.) and a Kara Travis (Conover, N.C.) walk.
The Bobcats have a quick turnaround and face UVa.-Wise Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1 & 3 p.m. in Wise, Va.
