HICKORY, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College softball team closed out its week with a pair of extra-inning victories over University of Virginia at Wise, 6-5, in eight innings and Concord, 2-1, in nine innings. The pair of victories improve LMC's record to 4-8 on the season.
Game 1: Lees-McRae pounded out a season-high 17 hits in the first game of the day against UVA-Wise. Despite the offensive outburst by LMC, the Cavaliers were able to push the Bobcats to their first extra-inning game of the season. In the extra frame, the Cavaliers scored two runs in the top half of the eighth to take a 5-3 lead. LMC rebounded to score three runs in the bottom half to pick up the 6-5 victory. The game-winning hit came off the bat of Kara Cunningham who drove in the final two runs on a single.
Cunningham was one of six Bobcats to have multiple hits in game one. Sarah Tucker and Karly McRary paced all LMC hitters with 3-for-4 outings. In the circle, Gabrielle Moyer picked up her first win of the season to improve to 1-0 on the season after working four-and-one-third innings.
Game 2: Unlike in the first game of the day, the second contest was controlled from the circle. The Bobcats scored first with an unearned run in the fifth, but Concord answered with an unearned run of its own to tie the score at 1-1 in the sixth. The winning run came across the plate in the top of the ninth as Caitlyn Ray hit a double in the gap to seal the 2-1 win for LMC.
Cunningham tossed all nine innings in the circle for the Bobcats and struck out a season-high six batters. The Indian Trail, N.C. native allowed just five hits and one walk in those nine innings pitched with no earned runs allowed.
Next Up: The Bobcats will return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel to take on Tusculum in Greenville, Tenn. in a doubleheader. Those two games have scheduled first pitches for 1 and 3 p.m.
