BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College softball team picked up a split in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader Friday against Belmont Abbey College. Lees-McRae won the first game of the day, 9-3, but dropped game two by a score of 9-6. With the results from Friday, the Bobcats' record now stands at 12-22 overall and 4-6 in league action.
Game 1 Recap: The Bobcats broke out the bats in a big way to start time the day as they scored in five of the six innings they came to the plate in on their way to the 9-3 win over the Crusaders.
Kara Cunningham not only picked up the win in the circle for the Bobcats in game one, but she also blasted her first home run of the season. On the day, Cunningham pitched seven innings, allowed three runs (none earned) and went 2-for-3 with two RBI. The win moved Cunningham's record to 6-7 this season.
In addition to the performance by Cunningham, Karly McRary and Sarah Stallings also posted multi-hit outings for the Bobcats. McRary went 2-for-4 and scored three of the team's nine runs, while Stallings went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI to go along with a triple.
Game 2 Recap: Belmont Abbey and Lees-McRae traded four-run innings early on in game two but the difference came when the Crusaders scored five runs in the top of the fifth to edge LMC in game two, 9-6.
Eight of the nine members of LMC's starting lineup posted hits in game two. Kirsten Doss tallied the team's lone extra base hit with a double. Caitlyn Ray drove in a team-high two runs, while Valerie Hickey and Noel Cassidy both notched two-hit games to round out the offensive leaders for LMC.
Lees-McRae used four different pitchers in the contest. Taylor Billings was saddled with the loss after pitching three-and-two-thirds innings. Billings, who allowed five runs (three earned), saw her record dip to 1-5 on the season with the loss.
Next Up: The Bobcats will return to their home field Saturday for another Conference Carolinas doubleheader when they host No. 15 Pfeiffer. The doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
