BANNER ELK, N.C. – After weather prevented the Lees-McRae College softball team from playing its home opener Friday, the Bobcats will head out on the road Saturday to take on Catawba in a non-conference doubleheader. Game times are set for 1 & 3 p.m.
Last Time Out – The Bobcats went 1-3 at last weekend's Coker Spring Tournament. LMC picked up its fourth win of the season over Fairmont State Sunday morning by a score of 10-2. On the weekend, Lees-McRae dropped decisions to Bloomsburg (5-3), Coker (1-0) and Charleston (4-3). The results put LMC's record at 4-12 on the 2018 season.
It's all about the bats – The recipe for success for Lees-McRae this spring has been traced to its bats. In the team's four wins, LMC boasts a team batting average of .310 and it has outscored opponents 20-8. On the flip side, in the team's 12 losses the Bobcats are hitting .210 as a team and have been outscored 65-21.
Kara keeps racking up the K's – In four outings last week in the circle, junior Kara Cunningham racked up 11 more strikeouts to bring her season total to 46. Cunningham's strikeout total not only paces all Conference Carolinas pitchers but it also ranks 28th nationally among Division II pitchers.
Strong Second and Seventh innings – For some reason the Bobcats have fared the best during the second and seventh innings in 2018. LMC is outscoring opponents 11-8 in the second inning, while also having a 7-2 advantage in the seventh.
About Catawba – The Indians are 8-6 through the first handful of weeks of the 2018 season. Catawba has lost back-to-back games coming into Saturday's twin bill with Lees-McRae as it fell twice to Young Harris last Sunday. As a team, Catawba is balanced both offensively and from the circle. The Indians are hitting .289 as a team, while boasting a 3.55 team ERA in 14 games.
Series Rewind vs. Catawba – Lees-McRae has not faced off against Catawba since the 2011 season. LMC fell in both of those contests by scores of 6-2 and 14-2.
