BELMONT, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College softball team split a pair of games Tuesday on the road at Belmont Abbey. The Bobcats rallied to down the Crusaders 5-3 in game one before Belmont Abbey edged LMC in game two, 2-1. The results Tuesday push Lees-McRae's record to 8-16 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Game One Recap – The Bobcats struck first in the opening game of the day notching a run in the top of the first inning. Belmont Abbey rallied with two in the third and one in the fifth to pull in front of Lees-McRae, 3-1. The difference in the game, however, came in the top of the sixth as the Bobcats scored four runs on four hits to pull in front for good winning game one, 5-3.
Lees-McRae had a good offensive outing in game one hitting .333 as a team in 24 at-bats to go along with six walks. Additionally, seven of the nine members of the starting lineup tallied at least one hit. Leading the charge for LMC was Caitlyn Ray who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Kara Cunningham picked up her eighth win of the season in the game one victory. The junior pitcher threw all seven innings for LMC allowing three runs (two earned), no walks and struck out six. Cunningham's record improves to 8-7 with the win.
Game Two Recap – In game two of the day, the tone was set from the pitcher's circle. The two teams combined for eight hits and just three runs in the contest. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, Belmont Abbey scored two of those three runs to salvage a split in the twin bill, 2-1.
Lees-McRae's lone run in game two came in the seventh inning when freshman Katie Robinson hit a solo home run. The long ball was Robinson's second of the season. Much like she did in game one, Ray collected two hits going 2-for-3 in game two.
Freshman Cassidy Largen took the loss in the circle for the Bobcats in game two. Largen tossed four-and-two-third innings, allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits to go along with three strikeouts.
Next Up – The Bobcats will return to action Thursday afternoon when they head to Spartanburg, South Carolina to take on Converse. First pitch between the Valkyries and Bobcats is slated for 1 p.m.
