Lady Bobcats Claw Queens

The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats got back into the win column Thursday evening, defeating Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference foe Queen's University 84-79 to end a four game losing skid. The win improves the Lady Bobcats to 4-9, (2-6 CVAC).

The Lady Bobcats came out strong, establishing the tempo of the game and an early lead, 10-6, just over five minutes in. A Lady Royals time out seemed to wake up the visitors, as they came back with a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to establish an eight point lead, 20-12. In control, the Lady Royals extended their lead to as much as eleven, before the Lady Bobcats began clawing their way back. After taking the charge of a Phylicia Turner offensive foul, Dianca Jones drove hard to the lane for the lay up, cutting the deficit to one with just over a minute to play in the half. The visitors would head to recess with a three point advantage, 40-37.

Jones picked up where she left off, grabbing the rebound of an errant Ashley McGuirt field goal and dishing to Cortney Furr down court After settling the ball on offence, Jones received Furr's pass from behind the three point arc, burying the long bomb to tie the game at 40, and sway the momentum to the home side. McGuirt responded with back to back field goals for the Lady Royals, while Jones was equal to the task scoring her team's next four points, as neither team was prepared to give an inch. Jones' play seemed to wake up the rest of the Lady Bobcats offence, igniting a 13-1 run that followed, for their largest lead of the game. The cushion was just enough for the home team to squeeze out their fourth win of the year.

McGuirt led the Lady Royals with a game high 24 points while Erinn Hayes chipped in 10 along with a game high eight rebounds, shared with Lady Bobcats forward Stephanie Mullinax.

Jones, (pictured top left), led the Lady Bobcats attack with her spirited effort, pouring in a team high 23 points, adding seven rebounds, and three assists. Mullinax chipped in 22 points with her game high eight rebounds, while Cameron Crapps went four for four from behind the three point arc and split her attempts from the charity stripe for 13 points. Ashley Coley was also perfect from beyond the arc, going four for five from the field for 10 points.

The Lady Bobcats will travel to CVAC for Coker College Saturday for a 2:00pm tip off.
