Lady Bulldogs Put Bite on Lady Bobcats

Dianca Jones scored a game high 23 points, but it wasn't enough as the Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats fell to first place Barton College, 86-75 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Williams Gymnasium. The Lady Bobcats fall to 6-12, (4-8 CVAC) while the Lady Bulldogs improve to a conference best 17-3, (13-1 CVAC).

The Lady Bobcats hung tough with the Lady Bulldogs, who entered the game on a ten game winning streak. After falling behind 6-0, the Lady Bobcats responded with a 10-2 run to take the lead and coast through the first half. The Lady Bobcats extended their lead to as much as eleven with 5:06 to play before the Lady Bulldogs showed exactly why they have only three losses this season, and began to bite back. Barton outscored Lees-McRae 17-10 over the final five minutes of the first half to send the teams into halftime with the home side holding a slight edge 41-37.

The Lady Bulldogs started the second half just as they finished the first, managing to close the gap and tie the score at 45 just under three minutes in. After trading baskets and the lead, the Lady Bulldogs put together a 12-4 run to pull away with just over eleven minutes to play. Lees-McRae would cut the deficit to six, but it was as close as they would come. Jo Denevan, Esty Flores and Kim Butts all converted their attempts from the charity stripe to seal the victory and maintain top spot in the CVAC.

Kendra Thomas led the Lady Bulldogs attack with 22 points going 7 of 11 from the floor, eight for eight from the free throw line while pulling down a game high 11 boards. Denevan was also perfect from the line, adding six to her 18 total points while Butts and Veronica Johnson chipped in with nine each respectively.

Jones, (pictured top left), added a team high seven rebounds to her game high 23 points. Stephanie Mullinax chipped in 11 points and four rebounds while Cameron Crapps went two for three from behind the arc and drained both of her free throw attempts for eight points. Victoria Valentin had a game and career high seven assists for the Lady Bobcats and also contributed four points.

Barton returns to action next Saturday February 10th when they travel to Anderson University in a battle of the CVAC's top two teams.

The Lady Bobcats return to action Tuesday evening, February 6th hosting Brevard College at 6:00pm.
