BANNER ELK, NC--The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats opened their Conference Carolinas schedule Tuesday evening hosting Belmont Abbey College at Williams Gymnasium, falling 57-47 to the Crusaders. The Lady Bobcats fall to 0-3 (0-1 Conference Carolinas) while Abbey improves to 2-0 (1-0 Conference Carolinas).
After falling behind 6-3 to start the game, the visitors quickly took control with a 16-2 run to take control of the game just past the ten minute mark. Brittany Roberson (Salisbury, NC) would stop the bleeding with a deuce from the baseline; however Abbey would respond with a Mercedes King three pointer, igniting a 19-7 scoring run that would take the visitors into halftime with a comfortable 38-17 lead.
The second half saw a different Lady Bobcat team take the floor. The Lady Bobcats used a 17-7 run to start the half and close the gap to 11 with just over eleven minutes to play. A 6-0 run by the visitors pushed their lead back to 17; however the Lady Bobcats would turn around and steal the momentum back with a seven point run of their own and trail by ten with just over six minutes remaining in the contest. The Lady Bobcats would manage to get as close as eight, however the offensive output by the Crusaders in the first proved to be too much, and the Abbey would escape with the win and remain undefeated in their young season.
"We played well in one half, but you need to play well in both at this level," commented Head Coach Sebastian Wild. "We had a bad shooting night, but we took care of many of the little things we wanted to, but it takes two good halves to win games. We weren't aggressive enough; we weren't ready to play in the first and it cost us the game. We came out flat and a good team like Abbey will take advantage of that and jump all over you and they certainly did."
Courtney Naquin led Abbey with a game high 15 points while Marie Marquez chipped in 14 and added a handful of assists. Asha Hardaway had ten for the Crusaders and shared the team high in rebounds with Allison Starkman, each pulling down five boards.
Roberson led the Lady Bobcats attack with 11 points and pulled down a game high six rebounds. Stephanie Mullinax (Etowah, TN) chipped in eight points and five rebounds.
The Lady Bobcats will be back in action one week from tonight, hosting Carson-Newman in non-conference action next Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30pm at Williams Gymnasium.
