Lady Bobcats Comeback Falls Short

BANNER ELK, NC--The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats fell 73-70 to visiting Carson-Newman Tuesday evening in non-conference women's basketball action at Williams Gymnasium. The Lady Bobcats fall to 0-4 while the Lady Eagles break into the win column, moving their record to 1-4.

After opening the game with an early 6-2 lead, the Lady Bobcats found themselves clawing their way back into the game for much of it. The visitors responded with a 12-2 run to take a six point lead at 14-8 and just under nine minutes to play in the first. The Lady Bobcats would tie things up at 14; however the Lady Eagles would again steal back the momentum, extending their lead to as much as ten before cruising into halftime with a comfortable nine point edge, 38-29.

Carson-Newman would start the scoring in the second, extending their lead to double digits with a pair of Angela Volentine free throws. Down eleven, the Lady Bobcats chipped away at the Lady Eagles lead with a 14-6 run to pull within three, 46-43. Once again, the visitors would regain momentum after regrouping to turn a three point lead into an eight point cushion in just over a minute and a half. In the roller coaster affair, the home side would challenge for the lead again with just under seven minutes to play and the score at 60-57, only to watch the Lady Eagles march right back out in front with an 11-4 run to take a ten point lead, 71-61, and 2:42 on the clock. The Lady Bobcats would tighten things up defensively for one final push, clawing their way back to within one, before a pair of Lady Eagles free throws ended the scoring.

The Lady Eagles were led by Tashea Ledbetter who went four for five from the field and drained all six attempts from the charity stripe for 14 points. Shari Buford picked up 14 for the visitors while Volentine, Ashley Kyle, and Ashley Tipton all registered nine points.

Junior Cortney Furr (Concord, NC) led the Lady Bobcats with a game and season high 15 points, while classmate Brittany Roberson (Salisbury, NC) registered 13 points and recorded four blocks, one short of the single game record she set last season. Erin Thompson (Ashburn, VA) and Renee Roberson (Salisbury, NC) also scored in double figures, adding 12 and ten respectively.

The Lady Bobcats will resume Conference Carolinas action this week, traveling to Anderson University Thursday while hosting Coker Saturday afternoon at Williams Gymnasium.
