Banner Elk, NC--In their second home contest of the week the Lady Bobcats gave up a seven point halftime lead to fall 68-63 to the Mt. Olive Trojans in Conference Carolinas action Saturday afternoon in Williams Gymnasium. Lees-McRae now stands at 3-3 in the conference (4-8 overall) while Mt. Olive climbs to 4-2 (6-7 overall).
Coach Wild and his team of Lady Bobcats had their work cut out for them today as they began the game with only seven players available to enter the game. The Lady Bobcats did not play as if they were at any disadvantage, grabbing a 6-5 lead at the 15:02 mark after a slow start by both sides .
Lees-McRae continued to build that lead throughout the half by taking advantage of the Trojans mistakes and capitalizing on opportunities at the charity stripe where they went 13-16 (81%). After getting up by as much as ten in the half Lees-McRae headed into the halftime break up seven after a last second shot by Mt. Olive's Lakeisha Monroe (Cameron, NC) brought the score to 37-30.
The small Lady Bobcat squad struck first after the break on a field goal by sophomore Jessica Lunsford (Elk Park, NC). They continued to control the second half of the game, eventually gaining a 12 point lead with thirteen minutes to go in the game on field goal by sophomore Renee Roberson (Salisbury, NC) who scored a season high 20 points.
However, the Trojans were not ready to pack it in yet, and battled their way back into the game slowly wearing down their opponents. With 1:45 left in the game Jill Oaks (Morristown, TN) scored putting the Trojans in the lead for the first time in thirty-three minutes. The Lady Bobcats answered right back with a three by Renee Roberson (assisted by point guard Jessica Lunsford) to regain the lead. The Trojans the scored twice in the final seconds of the game to defeat LMC 68-63.
"I couldn't be prouder of this group. They gave great effort against a very good team despite the odds," said Coach Sebastian Wild.
