Lady Bobcats Lose Nail Biter to Lady Lions

BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats lost to the Mars Hill College Lady Lions 74-70 in a game that went to the wire Saturday afternoon in non-conference action in Williams Gymnasium.

The Lady Lions exploded out the gate with a 13-3 lead on a trio of three-pointers. The Lady Lions controlled the first half and extended the lead to 15 before Ashley Holland (Duncan, S.C.) knocked down two free throws for the Lady Bobcats to make the halftime score 48-35, Lady Lions.

In the first half the Lady Lions shot 52 percent from the floor and an outstanding 81 percent from behind the three-point line. The Lady Bobcats shot a dismal 38 percent from the floor and 18 percent from behind the three-point line.

The second half was a much different story. The Lady Bobcats opened the half with a 20-8 run to tie the game at 56-56 with 12:36 to play. Senior captain Courtney Furr (Concord, N.C.) knocked down four threes during the run.

Lees-McRae extended the lead to six, 62-56, at the 9:30 mark, but Mars Hill would tie the game up five minutes later at 66-66. In the last four minutes only 11 total points were scored.

Britttini Young knocked down a three for Mars Hill to make it 66-69 with 2:45 to play. Lauren Casey (Raleigh, N.C.) made a field goal to cut the lead to one with 1:43 to play then Furr knocked down two free throws to give the Lady Bobcats a 70-69 lead with 54 seconds remaining. With 37 seconds left Megan Clevenger hit a free throw to tie the game.

With seven seconds on the clock, Shamia Terry drove the baseline and picked up a blocking foul to send her to the free throw line. After a technical foul on the Lees-McRae bench, Young made the technical foul free throws, and Terry hit her free throws to give the Lady Lions a 74-70 win.

Lauren Casey led the Lady Bobcats with 15 points and six assists. Furr and Holland added 14 points apiece with Furr collecting a team high four rebounds.

Young led the Lady Lions with 21 points hitting five of seven three point shots. Bria Smith added 14 points, while Jocelyn Williams and Shamia Terry added 11 and 10 points respectively.

The Lady Bobcats will host Pfeiffer Saturday, December 13th at 2 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium for their next game.
