BANNER ELK, N.C. - Four Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats scored double digit points to give the team a nine point win, 64-55, over the Anderson University Lady Trojans Monday night in Conference Carolinas action in Williams Gymnasium.
With the win, Lees-McRae improves to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in
conference action, while Anderson falls to 3-7 overall and 3-2 in
Leading the way for the Bobcats was senior Cortney Furr (Concord, N.C.), who had 12 points on 4 of 8 from the field and 2 of 4 from behind the three point line. Furr also knocked down both of her free throw attempts. Trailing Furr with 11 points were juniors Lauren Casey (Raleigh, N.C.) and Renee Roberson (Salisbury, N.C.). Casey led the Lady Bobcats at the free throw line hitting a perfect 4 for 4 on the night. Freshman Ashley Holland (Duncan, S.C.) had ten points, six boards, five assists and four steals.
Lees-McRae jumped out to an early 11-4 lead with 15:55 to play in the half when Casey knocked down a jumper, but Anderson would battle with a 12-2 run. Alexa Neal made a field goal to close out the Lady Trojan run and give them the lead.
The lead was short-lived when Holland made a free throw to tie the game at 16 with 7:27 remaining in the half. The Lady Bobcats extended the lead to eight, 26-18, on a Furr three with 2:41 left in the half, but the Lady Trojans closed the gap and trailed by four, 26-22, at the intermission.
Neither team shot the ball well in the first half. Lees-McRae was 28 percent, 9-31, from the floor and 30 percent, 3-10, from behind the three point line, while Anderson shot 30 percent, 8-26, from the floor and a dismal 16 percent, 1-6, from behind the arc. The Bobcats outshot the Lady Trojans from the free throw stripe going 5-6, 83 percent, compared to 5-9, 55 percent for the Lady Trojans.
In the second half Lees-McRae opened up a 14 point lead, 37-23, with 14:42 remaining in the game.
Anderson would cut the lead to four, 54-50, with 2:48 on the clock after Kirsten Peterson hit two free throws and Keana Boyd made a free throw, but Renee Roberson stepped up and knocked down a trey and a field goal on the next possession to give the Lady Bobcats a 59-50 lead.
In the second half the Bobcats were 12-27 from the field, 44 percent, and 3-9, 33 percent, from behind the three point line. Anderson was 11-30, 36 percent, from the field and 5-15, 33 percent, from behind the three point arc.
Keana Boyd came off the bench for the Lady Trojans to lead all scorers with 14 points. Shanice Wilson and Ashley Abed tallied 11 points each for the Trojans. Peterson grabbed a game high 15 rebounds.
Lees-McRae will travel to Limestone College for their next game on Thursday, January 8th at 5:30 p.m.
