SPARTANBURG, S. C. - Despite carrying a one-point halftime lead, the Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats fell to the Converse College Valkyries 75-65 Thursday night in a Conference Carolinas game.
Lauren Casey (Raleigh, N.C.) led the Lady Bobcats with 19 points and eight rebounds, going 6-6 at the free throw line. Amber Coleman (Alexandria, Va.)followed with 12 points, 4-8 from the floor, and four rebounds.
Leading the way for Converse was Ashley Arff, who scored 21 total points and had seven rebounds along with three assists. Alaina Smith put up 20 more points and pulled down eight rebounds. Sydney Brown added 12 points.
Converse got out in front quick with an 8-0 run until Lees-McRae's Cortney Furr (Concord, N.C.) made a field goal on a fast break. The Bobcats managed to tie the game on a free throw from Coleman.
The teams traded shots until a 16-16 tie that lead to a 7-0 run for the Lady Bobcats, but the Valkyries were able to cut the lead to one, 26-25 heading into the intermission.
The Valkyries went up by one on a Sydney Brown field goal and eventually pulled ahead by 10 points, 41-31 at 15:39.
For the remainder of the game, Converse managed to stay ahead by eight points and at one point gained a lead of 13. The game ended with Alaina Smith's final goal at the charity stripe which left only four seconds on the clock and the Bobcats down by 10, 75-65.
The Valkyries held the edge in field goal shooting going 43 percent from the field but were only 16 percent from behind the three-point line. The Lady Bobcats were 33 percent from the field and 17 from behind the arc.
Converse out rebounded Lees-McRae 48-40.
This win advances the Valkyries to 3-13 overall and 3-8 in the conference, while Lees-McRae drops to 6-9 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
Lees-McRae will travel to Coker College this weekend in a Conference Carolinas match with tipoff set for 2 p.m.
