BELMONT, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats women's basketball team fell to the Belmont Abbey College Lady Crusaders Thursday night in a conference game, 89-71.
Eight minutes into the game The Abbey held a 13-3 lead and used a 12-5 run to extend the lead to 17, 25-8, three minutes later.
But Lees-McRae would claw back into the game with a 23-8 run of their own in the final nine minutes of the first half.
Cortney Furr tied the game at 31 with 11 seconds on the clock, but a Shayla Jackson field goal gave the Lady Crusaders a 33-31 lead heading into the break.
Opening the second half, Furr drilled a three to give Lees-McRae a 37-35 lead with 18:14 showing on the clock.
The Lady Bobcats held the lead over the next four minutes, but another Jackson field goal tied the game at 50. Jackson gave The Abbey the lead for good on the ensuing possession with a lay up to make it 52-50.
The Lady Bobcats stayed within striking distance until 4:38 remained in the game when the Lady Crusaders closed the game out on a 13-4 run to give the game its final score of 89-71.
Lauren Casey led the Lady Bobcats for the third time in four games with 22 points and a team high eight rebounds. Ashley Holland chipped in with 11 points, and Erin Thompson added ten points for the only Lady Bobcats in double digits.
Courtney Naquin led The Abbey with 28 points, and Jackson scored 20 points. Kelsey Daniel earned a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Abbey outrebounded Lees-McRae 44-24 and averaged 1.24 points per possession compared to Lees-McRae's .97 points per possession.
Lees-McRae will return to action Saturday, February 14th at 2 p.m. as they travel to Mount Olive College.
