GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Despite early foul trouble, Lauren Casey scored 20 points, including four points with less than two minutes on back-to-back possessions, to give the tenth seeded Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats a 64-62 upset win against the seventh seeded Limestone College Lady Saints in the first round of the 2009 Conference Carolinas Tournament.
With 2:06 remaining and the Lady Bobcats up 56-53, Casey split two defenders on a spin move to find the basket to make it 58-53.
Following a Lady Saint bucket, Casey again split a double team with a one-handed layup to push the lead back to five, 60-55.
After a defensive stop, Ashley Holland made a layup to make it 62-56, but back-to-back buckets by Limestone closed the lead right back to three, 62-59.
Two free throws by Amber Coleman with 33 seconds left proved to be the game winners.
Limestone canned a three to make it 64-62, but Lees-McRae was able to run out the clock to seal the win and advance.
The Lady Bobcats held the lead the entire game with the largest lead at 16, 46-30, following an 11-0 run coming out of the locker rooms at half. The Lady Bobcats held the Lady Saints scoreless for the first seven minutes of the second half.
Lees-McRae was 39 percent from the floor and 39 percent from three, while Limestone was 41 percent from field goal and 30 percent from behind the arc.
Casey led the Lady Bobcats with 20 points, her third consecutive 20 point performance. Coleman added 13 points and was the only other Lady Bobcat in double digits. Renee Roberson grabbed a team high seven rebounds. Coleman and Holland handed out a team high four assists each.
With the upset, the Lady Bobcats travel to the second seeded Mount Olive for round two of the tournament Wednesday, March 4th at 7 p.m.
