MISENHEIMER, N.C. --- The Pfeiffer University women's basketball team outscored Lees-McRae College by a 51-21 margin in the second half en route to an 87-52 victory in Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday night in Merner Gym.
Pfeiffer (8-10, 7-5 CC) posted a 46.6 field goal percentage, including an even 50 percent clip in the second half, while holding Lees-McRae (3-13, 3-8 CC) to a 31 percent mark on the night. The Falcons won the battle on the glass by a 45-31 margin, including a 33-21 advantage on the defensive boards, while converting 19 Bobcats miscues into 26 points.
Janina Thurau (Berlin, Germany) paced the Bobcats with eight points on 3-of-8 shooting, as Erin Thompson (Ashburn, Va.), Candace Flowers (Charlotte, N.C.), and Sophie Witte (Hamburg, Germany) each recorded seven markers. Witte also paced the Bobcats with six rebounds, while Icey Patterson (Seneca, S.C.) chipped in three assists.
Brittany Cox (Winston-Salem, N.C.) poured in a game-high 24 points on 6-of-12 shooting for Pfeiffer, knocking down 6-of-10 attempts from beyond the arc and going a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line. Christina Harvey (Locust Grove, Va.) and Shelley Reese (Brown Summit, N.C.) joined Cox in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively, as Kellie Rhoney (Catawba, N.C.) dished out a game-high seven assists. Cox also posted a contest-best seven rebounds and three steals.
The first half proved to be a tightly contested period, with neither team opening more than a five-point lead as Pfeiffer carried a 36-31 lead into the intermission after closing the half on a 6-0 run. Pfeiffer carried the momentum into the second half, opening the period on a 12-2 run to take a 48-33 lead on a Harvey jumper with 15:47 to play. The Falcons continued to dictate the flow of play over the next 10 minutes, stretching the lead to 73-45 before closing out the 87-52 win with a 14-7 spurt in the final five minutes.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Monday when the Bobcats travel to Charlotte, N.C. to take on Queens University of Charlotte in a 5:30 p.m. conference matchup. The Royals won the season's first meeting by a 70-57 score on Jan. 6.
