LAURINBURG, N.C. --- Janina Thurau (Berlin, Germany) poured in a game-high 19 points, and Sophie Witte (Hamburg, Germany) added a double-double with 16 markers and 10 rebounds to lead the Lees-McRae College women's basketball team to a 87-53 win over St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday afternoon.
Lees-McRae (5-14, 5-9 CC) coasted to its second straight win in conference play, posting a 49.1 percent clip from the floor, including a 51.9 percent mark in the first half, while holding St. Andrews (0-20, 0-16 CC) to a 26.9 percent field goal percentage. The Bobcats won the battle on the glass by a 40-28 margin, including a 31-20 advantage on the defensive boards, while converting 32 Knight miscues into 37 points.
Thurau led all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including a 5-for-7 mark from beyond the arc. Witte added 16 markers on 6-of-11 shooting while pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds. Icey Patterson (Seneca, S.C.) and Kasey Haynes (Lake Norman, N.C.) chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively, as Patterson dished out a game-high eight assists.
Tyler Knight (Greenville, N.C.) paced St. Andrews with 15 points off the bench, while Natalie Whitman (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) added 11 markers of her own. Knight also pulled down a team-high five rebounds while Brittiany Roberts (Morganton, N.C.) dished out a squad-best three assists.
Neither team held a significant advantage until the midway point of the first half, when Lees-McRae launched a 12-2 run to take a 23-13 lead on a jumper by Melissa Jensen (Aarhus, Denmark) at the 9:18 mark. The Bobcats then closed the half with a 17-12 spurt to take a 40-25 lead into the intermission.
Lees-McRae carried the momentum into the second half, opening the period with an 18-4 run to take a 58-29 lead on a Candace Flowers (Charlotte, N.C.) triple with 12:17 to play. The Bobcats held on from there, maintaining the double-digit advantage for the remainder of the game en route to the 87-53 victory.
Lees-McRae returns to the hardwood on Tuesday when the Bobcats host Limestone College to continue their conference schedule. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium.
