BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Pfeiffer University women's basketball team outscored Lees-McRae College by a 37-27 margin over the final 20 minutes to break a halftime deadlock, and defeat the Bobcats 73-63 in Conference Carolinas play.
Pfeiffer (7-5, 1-1 CC) posted a field goal percentage of 42.9 percent on the afternoon, including a 52.6 percent clip from outside the arc, while limiting Lees-McRae (5-4, 1-2 CC) to a 37.5 percent mark from the floor. The Falcons edged the Bobcats by a 45-39 margin on the glass, including a 30-25 advantage on the defensive boards, as Pfeiffer's bench outscored LMC's reserves, 41-22.
Sophomore Paige Whitaker (Harrisburg, N.C.) and freshman DeAnna Waters (Upper Marlboro, Md.) paced the Bobcats with 14 points each, while Kerri Belcher (Roanoke, Va.) and Icey Patterson (Seneca, S.C.) both added 10 markers of their own. Chloe Parker (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in eight rebounds and a game-high five steals, while Belcher and Waters each posted a team-best nine rebounds.
Brittany Cox led the way for Pfeiffer with a game-high 17 points, as Vontreece Hayes and Sam Craven added 15 and 14 markers, respectively. Haley Grimsley chipped in 12 points, as Cox nearly recorded a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds.
The Falcons jumped out to an early 18-12 lead in the first half on Grimsley's jumper at the 12:50 mark. Pfeiffer held the lead until the waning moments of the period, when Lees-McRae put together a 13-7 spurt over the final five minutes to send the game into the intermission tied at 36-36.
The Bobcats opened the second half with an 8-4 run, claiming a 44-40 lead on a Waters jumper at the 15:54 mark before Pfeiffer responded with a 15-0 surge, snatching a 55-44 advantage on Craven's jumper with 11:09 to play. The Falcons would hold on from there, stretching the lead to as much as 22 points before the Bobcats closed out the game an 11-1 run over the final four and a half minutes, equaling the final margin of 73-63.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Tuesday when the Bobcats host Erskine College in conference play at 5:30 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium.
