Cobras surge past Bobcats, 86-68Box score
BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Jessica Cohen posted a double-double with game-highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Coker College women's basketball team to an 86-68 win over Lees-McRae College in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday afternoon in Williams Gymnasium.
Coker (3-13, 3-4 CC) posted a field goal percentage of 52.6 percent on the night, including a 53.6 percent clip in the first half, while holding Lees-McRae (5-9, 1-7 CC) to a mark of 39.7 percent in the contest. The Cobras won the battle on the glass by a 44-28 margin, including a 31-19 advantage on the defensive boards.
Icey Patterson (Seneca, S.C.) paced the Bobcats with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting, dishing out a game-high four assists while adding three steals. DeAnna Waters (Upper Marlboro, Md.) chipped in 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Paige Whitaker (Harrisburg, N.C.) poured in 10 markers. Kerri Belcher (Roanoke, Va.) and Amber Coleman (Alexandria, Va.) each added three steals.
Cohen connected on 9-of-11 attempts from the field and went 9-for-10 at the line to record a game-high 27 points, while adding 11 rebounds and three blocks. Amber Lau chipped in 22 points and four assists, while Kelley Godbout poured in 19 markers on 7-of-10 shooting.
Coker led wire-to-wire, opening a 14-7 lead in the first half on a Godbout layup before the Bobcats responded with a 24-18 run to trim the margin to 32-31 on a Whitaker jumper with 2:17 to play in the period. The Cobras closed out the half with an 8-5 spurt, taking a 40-36 lead into the intermission following a three-point play from Patterson.
The Cobras responded in the second half, opening the period with a 21-7 run to take a 61-43 lead on a layup by Jasmine Evans at the 14:04 mark. Coker would hold the double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest, closing out the game with a 10-2 run over the last three and a half minutes to equal the final margin of 86-68.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Tuesday when the Bobcats host Converse College in conference play at 5:30 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium. The Bobcats will also host Coaches vs. Cancer night on Tuesday, as head coach Sebastian Wild and his staff will wear sneakers with their suits as part of the "Suits and Sneakers" campaign.
