Royals surge past Bobcats, 79-60

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Dyonna Battle poured in a game-high 26 points to lead the Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team to a 79-60 win over Lees-McRae College in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday afternoon in Williams Gymnasium.

Queens (9-15, 7-8 CC) posted a field goal percentage of 47.2 percent on the afternoon, including a 52.2 percent clip in the second half, while holding Lees-McRae (8-14, 4-12 CC) to a mark of 27.1 percent from the floor in the contest. The Bobcats won the battle on the glass by a 51-46 margin, including a 28-14 advantage on the offensive boards, as Queens converted 26-of-34 attempts at the free throw line.

DeAnna Waters (Upper Marlboro, Md.) led the way for the Bobcats with a double-double, recording 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Paige Whitaker (Harrisburg, N.C.) added 11 points with a trio of three-pointers, as Chloe Parker (Chicago, Ill.) and Candace Flowers (Charlotte, N.C.) each posted 10 markers. Parker also pulled down eight rebounds.

Battle led all scorers with 26 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including an 11-for-14 night at the free throw line. Melissa Thomas added 16 points with a 6-for-10 game from the floor, as Sarah Myatt nearly recorded a double-double with nine markers and nine rebounds. Shonice Pettaway chipped in 12 points, as Thomas posted a game-high four steals.

Queens got off to a strong start in the first half, opening a 14-6 lead on a Myatt jumper with 12:23 to go in the period. The Bobcats would cut the margin to 18-14 with an 8-4 spurt, which was capped by a Waters lay-in at the 9:37 mark. Queens responded with a 13-7 run to push the lead to 31-21 on a Battle jumper before the Bobcats answered, closing out the half with a 10-6 spurt to cut the advantage to 37-31 heading into the intermission.

After the Bobcats cut the lead to 37-34 with a Whitaker triple to open the second half, Queens responded with an 18-6 surge over the next eight minutes, pushing the margin to 55-40 on a Thomas layup with 11:22 to play. The Royals would hold on from there, widening the advantage to as many as 23 points down the stretch en route to the 79-60 victory.

Lees-McRae returns to the court on Tuesday when the Bobcats host North Greenville University in their regular season finale at 5:30 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium. The Bobcats will honor their three seniors, Parker, Amber Coleman (Alexandria, Va.), and Sophie Witte (Hamburg, Germany) during the contest.
